First Industrial Workshop in Ceramics: Data Storage Technology

Today in an ever more rapidly evolving world progress has become almost expected. Formany companies this has translated into shortened product time cycles and a need toimprove technology at a steady pace. For many years the medical industry has employedbrute force high throughput screening in their search for new organic compounds. Therevolution started with the 96-well plate and the automation that came along with it. Todaydrug discovery uses 1,536-well plates and usually screen half a million data points a day.Material science has not been as fast / suitable to adopt these methods. However, there area number of possibilities for thin film development. In this presentation I will describe someof the work that has been completed at Seagate Technology to adopt to a morecombinatorial approach in the search for new alloys and overcoats for disc drives, and showhow we have worked on increasing the speed of the experiments as well as how statisticalmethods are employed to extract knowledge behind the sometimes daunting amount ofdata. Fabrication and Processing of Nanomagnetic Structures for InformationTechnologies DAVID J. SELLMYERMaterials Research Science and Engineering CenterUniversity of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE 68588, USAe-mail: [email protected], phone (402) 472-2407 This talk will discuss recent work involving the deliberate structuring at the nanoscale ofnanomagnetic clusters, dots, wires, etc., for use in future data storage or other magnetictechnologies. Topics covered may include: (1) High-anisotropy nanocluster films for Tb/inrecording. This concerns L10-structure FePt and CoPt clusters embedded in nonmagneticmatrices which permits thermal stability as well as control of exchange coupling betweenthe particles. (2) Self-organized nanomagnetic dots and wires. Considered here areferromagnetic dots and wires electrodeposited in nanoporous alumina where the lengthscales are similar to the relevant domain-wall or exchange lengths of the systems. (3)Nanotube magnetism. We introduce a new method for fabrication of FePt anf Fe3O4nanotubes, viz., hydrogen reduction in nanochannels of porous alumina templates.Coercivities from 0.6 kOe for Fe3O4 to 21 kOe for FePt nanotubes have been observed. (4)Interaction and switching behavior of anisotropic magnetic dots. Focused-ion-beam millingis used to produce sets of three nanodots with controlled shape anisotropy and switchingbehavior. This work is related to elementary magnetic information processing devices. Theexperimental studies are coupled with analytical and/or micromagnetic simulational workwhich will be discussed as well.
